Whitney
Herrington

Executive, founder, and institutional operator building new systems for how people work and advocate for themselves.

Portrait of Whitney Herrington in warm window light

The people with the least information are asked to make the highest-stakes decisions about their own working lives.

For two decades Whitney has run the operating side of institutions that carry public weight—civil rights coalitions, legal advocacy organizations, and national grantmakers—where the work is rarely visible and the consequences always are. Avren extends that record rather than departing from it: the same question of who holds information when a person has to advocate for themselves at work, answered now with software instead of policy. Ascend People keeps her inside the organizations doing that work today. HR Uncensored says in public what most operators only say privately.

Current practice

Avren

Worker-side advocacy intelligence.

Avren gives employees the context that has historically sat only on the employer's side of the table: what a policy actually means, what has happened to people in comparable positions, what a reasonable ask looks like, and what to say next. Whitney leads product direction and the company's institutional partnerships.

HR Uncensored

Public conversation about how work actually works.

A recurring series in which Whitney takes apart the language of HR—severance, performance management, reorganizations—for the people on the receiving end of it.

“Most of what employees are told is a policy is actually a preference. Knowing the difference is leverage.”
